Target — yeah, I know, I know

Here’s the thing. I’m usually against everything Target stands for, namely that big box-store mentality that transports Jacklyn Smith and Kathy Ireland goods to the most remote corners of the country, while young and not-so-young anonymous designers fresh out of Parsons and RISD struggle to sell a single gorgeous and thoughtful scarf.

While there are plenty of shops and boutiques that carry indie lines for indie prices, there are far more — at least in Manhattan and Brooklyn — that think they can jack up the prices on “interesting.”

It was this type of negative attitude, coupled with the fact that I was broker than usual this week, holiday season and all, that led me inside that fire-engine red mega chainstore. And I’m sorry to say I found, not one — but TWO — adorable outfits.

Xhilaration® Juniors 3/4 Sleeve Brocade Dress – Black/Wine/Gold — $19.99

Xhilaration

Xhilaration® Juniors Charmeuse Fashion Skirt – Floral Brushstroke — $16.99

Xhilaration

The best thing to keep in mind while shopping at mega stores –well, two things to keep in mind — 1) You really can’t wrong with outfits that cost less than $20 — even if the skirt falls apart in six months, I wouldn’t feel cheated and 2) Recession fashion is all about PIECES, not the whole. The above skirt will look amazing with black leggings (it barely covers the upper thigh), a black scoop-neck ballerina top and something purple…like..

Pendant from Etsy — $28.50
