With everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Marc Jacobs dressing their girls in prim, ladylike (in some cases, borderline granny-like) designs, it was refreshing and unexpected to see so many slick, shiny, jewel-toned jackets slide down the F/W 2012 runway.
While I think they look a bit cheap, it’s in the best possibly way – like smeared lipstick on a fresh, beautiful face. I can easily visualize pairing them with boring gray or beige slacks. Or, if I am feeling gutsy, perhaps throwing one over bubblegum cigarette pants, ala Diane Von Furstenberg:
Notice the use of an amazingly rich burgundy hue, the color of the season. Here’s a different take on the jacket (hello, double-breasted, where have you been all my life?) by Alexander Wang:
Of course, given my newfound obsession with Mad Men mod, I can’t help but think of Megan Draper and what she wore the day she quit her job:
And so, where can we find this look for less, you ask?
Asos Shiny Pu Jacket $34.14
Bradley by Bradley Bayou Snake Embossed Patent Leather Jacket $113.78
Dennis Basso Patent Leather Single Breasted Big Button Coat $36.84
Roaman’s Leather Trench Coat $86.63
Perfect for petite frames – Asos.com $82.85
American Apparel-afied to an extreme, but it does capture another F/W 2012 trend: metallics. Plus, it’s uber-cheap at just $35
And lastly, consider it Take Your Shiny, Slightly Sluttier You to Work Day with this white blazer from Charlotte Russe $36.99. I recommend pairing it with something that won’t make you look like a busty margarita.
